And so, in early 1992, a panel of single malt experts was convened at Riedel¿s headquarters in Austria to test a range of different glasses. On the basis of this first selection, Georg Riedel undertook further research with the help of master distillers in Scotland. The result is this glass: an elongated thistle shape on a truncated stem. The design incorporates a small, slightly out-turned lip that directs the spirit onto the tip of the tongue, where sweetness is perceived, and serves to bring out the elegant creaminess of a top-quality single malt. In September 1992, a group of Britain¿s leading single malt experts gathered in London to test the prototype. They agreed that the subtle aromas of the whisky were lost in a traditional tumbler; brandy balloons emphasized the alcohol at the expense of finesse; and the copita tended to magnify the oak components to such an extent that the whisky began to take on cognac-like characteristics. The Riedel glass emerged as the clear winner, bringing forward the pure malt character of all the whiskies tasted by concentrating their aromas and accentuating their softness, roundness and silkiness.Recommended for: Single Malt Whisky, Malt Whisky, and Whisky. | | | |

Not worth the extra money Oct 01, 2009 MY husband and I have purchased several of the basic Riedel whisky glasses. They are wonderful -- especially for those who love their single malts. However, the Sommeliers series was four times the price for exactly the same glass -- only thinner. As a result they shatter very easily. Save your money and go with the basic line. SOmetimes less is not more.

Why drink more lead? Aug 15, 2009 All these glasses offer is more lead, which - last I checked - isn't very good for you. Be assured that any fine single malt tastes exactly the same out of glasses that costs a fraction of the price. Go with regular whiskey glassware and I guarantee you won't know the difference -- heck, you'll probably even live 10 years longer!

The Only Way To Truly Enjoy Single Malt Scotch May 13, 2009 I own four of these fine crystalline works of art and love them more every time that I get a chance to enjoy vintage scotch. They way they mute harsh tones and emphasize the soft and subtle beauties of well made whiskey is unparalleled in any other whiskey glass that I have used. Caring for these lovelies is a labor of love, but it's worth the trouble. Definitely glassware worth having, especially if you love whiskey like I do. Nothing else even comes close.

Riedel Sommeliers Whiskey Glass Jan 18, 2008 My husband and I enjoy Macallan scotch and the difference in drinking it with these glasses versus regular scotch glasses is amazing. You notice it first in the smell, as the glass opens the scotch up beautifully. Then the way the glass is made the scotch first hits the tip of your tongue so you get the sweet velvet taste of the scotch. Wonderful glasses!
